Geriatric doctors, also called geriatricians, specialise in caring for aging adults who often have complex medical issues. They have a particular focus on keeping you functional and helping you maintain your quality of life. Geriatric doctors understand caregiver’s roles and work with family members, too.
Geriatricians diagnose and treat issues that affect older adults. Their patients often have one or more chronic health issues and subsequently may be on multiple medications for different issues, for this reason Geriatricians have an expertise in managing polypharmacy. While a geriatrician will generally manage your overall care, they also work with others on your health care team, such as General Practitioners, Pharmacists, Social Workers, Allied Health Therapists and Community Health teams.
