Geriatrician
Dr Caroline Chau is a consultant geriatrician with a strong commitment to supporting older adults through the journey of ageing, with a focus on maintaining dignity, physical function, and quality of life.
She works as a staff specialist geriatrician at St George Public Hospital, where she provides care across the general aged care wards as well as within the specialist behavioural unit, managing patients with advanced dementia and significant behavioural and psychological symptoms. Dr Chau is also affiliated with the clinical school as a UNSW Conjoint Lecturer, reflecting her ongoing engagement in medical education and training.
Dr Chau has a particular vocational interest in improving and expediting access to aged care services, including supporting patients and families navigating care pathways in regional New South Wales.
Her clinical interests include the assessment and management of dementia, particularly complex behavioural and psychological symptoms, as well as facilitating community‑based palliative care. Dr Chau adopts a collaborative, patient‑centred approach, working closely with patients, their families and carers, and other involved health professionals to establish clear and meaningful goals of care. She applies best‑practice, evidence‑based models to support informed decision‑making and optimise outcomes, and is committed to empowering patients and carers with the knowledge and resources needed to preserve physical function and quality of life.
Consultations Offered
Dr Chau provides comprehensive geriatric consultations, including:
- Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment
- Falls risk assessment and prevention
- Diagnosis and management of dementia
- Behavioural management in dementia
- Medication review and optimisation
- Navigation of the Aged Care System, including My Aged Care and ACAT referrals
- Capacity assessments (in more complex cases, referral may be made for formal assessment with Neuropsychologist Jillian McMillan)
- Home visits and nursing home visits
Appointment Information
For consultations, patients are requested to bring:
- Any previous brain imaging reports and images (if available)
- Prior My Aged Care documentation or ACAT codes
- All current medications or Webster Paks or an up‑to‑date medication list
Patients are encouraged to bring a support person where possible.
