Gastroenterologist

Dr Elizabeth O’Brien is a Specialist Physician and Gastroenterologist who lives locally in the Southern Highlands with her husband and son and works at Bowral District Hospital and Southern Highlands Private Hospital. Dr O’Brien completed a bachelor’s degree with honours in Medical Science at the University of Sydney in 2006, during which time she undertook basic science research in collaboration with the Garvan Institute of Medical Research.

She subsequently completed a master’s degree in public health (MPH) with distinction, and a postgraduate degree in Medicine (MBBS). Dr O’Brien completed specialist training within NSW Health hospitals between 2012 and 2019 and during this time was predominantly based in Sydney. In 2019 she also spent time at the motility unit at Washington University’s School of Medicine in St Louis, Missouri, USA.

Dr O’Brien strongly believes in the value of continuity of care, and a holistic approach to management. She has a broad range of interests including colorectal cancer screening, the evaluation of gastrointestinal bleeding including positive faecal occult blood tests (FOBTs), managing inflammatory bowel disease, liver diseases and functional gastrointestinal conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome.

Dr O’Brien is accredited for gastroscopy and colonoscopy by the Conjoint Committee for the Recognition of Training in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and conducts these diagnostic procedures at Southern Highlands Private Hospital.

She is also a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Gastroenterological Society of Australia.
